Compression test

Does anyone know the best way to test the compression on the L-series?
I think this is the next on the list of sorting out the starting issue I have on my freelander.
I have foundthe size of the tool to use on the glow plugs but does anyone know what size tool is required to use the injectors?

Most people don't compression test diesels as it is a lot more complicated than testing a petrol engine (pressures are MUCH higher)
What is the issue you are having?
If you are going to compression test it then you can either use an adapter for the glow plugs (access is a nightmare on some plugs), or you use ones for the injectors. You don't use them both at the same time.

The cold starting problem still. It's having timing checked again at a LR specialist next week then a compression test if its not the timing.

Just read the vp30 failure post, sounds like the symptoms I'm getting.

The freelander doesn't have the VP30 pump though (its a version of the VP37).
Checking the timing is simple enough, it doesn't need to go to a specialist. a 9.5mm drill and a 6.5mm drill are the only two "special" tools needed (unless you have the proper timing pin kit of course).

It's meant to be spot on when it had the full new kit on it. But my car was out when that was also meant to be spot on by the same garage. So for piece of mind I'm getting the LR garage to check that first, then look at a compression test next if the timing is in fact perfect. Hopefully it will be just the timing is out, and nothing more costly. I need a lot of stuff on it now suspension and bushes.
Does the vp37 have the meter and timing solenoids as well that can be replaced?

VP37 has a timing solenoid but this rarely fails (unlike the VP30!)
The VP37 is very reliable in general. The Freelander got a higher pressure version than the 200/400/600's and also different injectors too (smaller ones).
