Engine hunts at idle

Post by E_T_V »

Someone has had this problem and so I'll suggest a few possible answers to it.

Symptoms:
Engine hunts at idle
If moving when not in gear pressing the brake pedal stops the hunting
If stationary brake pedal has no effect on hunting.

Probable causes:
Tuning box turned up too high (If fitted!) - Turn it down
Wiring for injection pump damaged/high resistance. - Wires chafe at the pump, and wiring connectors behind the cam belt "dry" out. Remove the electrical plugs and dose with WD40 and/or contact cleaner.
Faulty ECU coolant temperature sensor (or wiring)
Faulty fuel temperature sensor (inside the fuel pump) or wiring for it.

Things to note:
Hunting in neutral when moving is normal behaviour for the 600. Probably the same on the 2/400 intercooled models too.

Hope this assists someone.
