Turbo Failure

Post by sidmurphy »

I have had what I have seen called turbo "run on" with an MG ZS diesel ..... it blew smoke and revved (even with ignition switched off) until it died. should I attempt to start it to see if head gasket is blown (i.e check if water and coolant runs out of system quickly)??

Fill the sump back up with oil (if empty that isn't a good sign).
Check the coolant level
Remove the top intercooler pipe, make sure nothing will get sucked into the open air intake for the engine.

Then try and start it. If it starts and sounds normal without any signs of pressuring the coolant then a simple turbo swap and intercooler drain may have you back on the road relatively inexpensively.
